[Explanation of the Recovery Process for Oculoplastic Surgery]
Plastic surgeon Zhang Cheng provides a detailed explanation of the recovery process for various double-eyelid surgeries, canthoplasty, and lower eyelid bag removal surgery, so that those planning oculoplastic surgery can make postoperative work and life arrangements, and those in the recovery period can also wait patiently for recovery!
1. Buried-suture double-eyelid surgery:
The postoperative swelling period is short; severe edema generally lasts 3-4 days, recovery is quick, and appropriate makeup may be applied one week after surgery.
2. Incisional double-eyelid surgery:
Incisional double-eyelid surgery causes more swelling, and the swelling period is relatively longer. Generally, swelling is more severe in the first 3 days after surgery; by the time sutures are removed at one week, swelling is basically reduced. Complete resolution of swelling takes 1-3 months, and recovery takes 3-6 months. The surgical incision will also go through a process from red, proliferative scarring to lightening, softening, and maturation.
3. Incisional double-eyelid surgery for correction of upper eyelid ptosis:
Swelling is more severe during the first three days after surgery; after suture removal at one week, most swelling has subsided; complete recovery takes about more than six months. Patients of this type should note that they should view the surgery with the mindset of seeking medical treatment for a condition, rather than a purely cosmetic mindset, focusing on correction of the upper eyelid ptosis. Surgery for this pathological need has a longer recovery period, and after surgery patients also need to adjust their own eye-use habits.
4. Revision surgery for failed double-eyelid surgery:
Because previous surgery has already caused severe damage to ocular tissues, performing revision surgery again will cause new stimulation and injury. Therefore, recovery will be slower. Sometimes fat grafting, tissue flap transplantation, and other procedures are also required. Thus, patients undergoing revision surgery for failed double-eyelid surgery must be fully psychologically prepared, follow medical advice strictly, and work together to achieve the desired revision outcome.
5. Eye-corner opening surgery (canthoplasty)
Generally, some scar hyperplasia may occur in the early stage, and there is no need for particular concern. Scar hyperplasia is more severe 1-2 months after surgery, with an obvious pulling sensation. After suture removal, scar treatment medications may be used for preventive treatment. Complete recovery takes about more than six months.
6. Lower eyelid bag removal surgery:
Generally, the severe edema period occurs at 2-3 days, and bruising around the eyes may appear in the early stage. Transconjunctival lower eyelid bag removal does not require suture removal, and swelling subsides 7 days after surgery; transcutaneous lower eyelid bag removal requires suture removal at 5-7 days, and complete resolution of swelling takes about 1 month. Complete recovery takes 1-3 months.
